 | 11:34 am - gadolinium chelate, Batman! When I was having the MRI, I was given a consent form for contrast dye
injection. I'm automatically wary of injections, being needle-phobic,
but I was also curious.

 | 11:01 am - It has been a highly emotional week I can't remember a roller coaster like this in a long time (thank goodness). Happily, things are beginning to even out, and it's going to be a kinda low-key weekend at the House of Chaos. As always, people are welcome to stop by and say howdy, pet the dogs, try to entice calvinthedeeple to put on some weight, and entice the other residents to try to take off some weight :-). You may even get to meet the Recalcitrant Sister and the Recalcitrant Brother in Law.
I'm finishing up the dark brown tank I've been lazily making for a long time. Not sure what the next project will be. After I made the tank I decided I wanted sleeves, so I'm trying to fashion some add on sleeves and kinda failing, so we'll see how that goes. Just doing the crochet around the neck to make it all spiffy now. At worst it will remain a tank, made out of gorgeous baby alpaca fiber that feels so soft and yummy.
Besides that, we're kinda full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes. CHARGE! Current Mood: cheerful

 | 10:34 am - A Brief Thank You Note I just wanted to say thank you for being an asshole it reminds me that I must treat strangers with care because you don't
act like you respect me darling you play that part so well with charisma and grace you fool me every single time
however, I too can play not so nice sly I can slip things past you because your vanity is so immense you can't see me slicing at the edge
of your ego scratching it up in that way that you won't notice the very expensive damage to the finish until late the next day and you will wonder
who fucked me over? and I won't come to mind still a discarded thought the hand with the chisel won't be caught
and you will curse those little marks all those hours of every day you spend looking in the mirror the question of blame
still buzzing in your ear like a mosquito that every time you think it's dead gets a little louder and it drives you crazy at random for the rest of your days
you can thank me when you figure it out oh wait you won't once again I escape your gratitude

Happy 4th of July for those who have reason for it to be a happy occasion.

 | 09:09 am - Oh, Chuck (Again with WaPo OnFaith.)
I thought Chuck Colson had been one of the more reasonable panelists. However, his most recent entry gives the game away, I think, belying the deeper thinking that subverts reason while pretending to adhere to it. His response embodies everything I find odious about religious thought.
How can people be this dishonest and still sleep at night?
[Edit] For whatever reason, the links to his response don't work anymore. One can only wonder. To summarize, then, Colson made the claim that there are no atheists; there are only people too proud to recognize what is innately true. The hateful part was where he said that he has never been able to find an atheist who could prove that God did not exist. This is only a paraphrase, but he didn't add to much to it. I am thankful that not all religious folks I deal with are this obtuse.
[Edit 2] And, looks like it's back up,
In related news, Happy Independence Day!

 | 08:22 am - Arisia The hotel will be under construction next year and all the rooms that will be used as dealers rooms on the 3rd floor will be striped. This is both good & bad. +more room in room for vending stuff without having to pay an extra fee. +cheaper -probably no curtains (but I get up early anyway. Still, could make the room hotter if it's sunny & I've got a similar location as last year. Maybe I should ask not to be on the south side of the building. The more I think about it - yes, I should. Heat has been an issue in the past. -no lights -no TV for masqurade
I'm OK with bringing an air mattress to sleep on - I did last year for the day before the con anyway. And I'm looking at small, more portable lights. Want some for spots for my photos anyway.
But the best news is that my boss is planning a vacation - which may have him away so I can extend the trip a bit. If I'm going to use all that gas it'd be nice to do something else. Last year my boss went away the week before the con, returning that Saturday so I had to rush back on Monday.
I'm going to have real hours this year and make sure I have time for fun. Dinners with friends. Parties. Tentative schedule: (would love comments) Friday: open until 10:00 Sat: 10-5, 7-10 Sun: 12-5, 7-10 Mon: 10-close

 | 02:04 am - See what they did there? "Cutes-E, but not enough gravit-E." says Jules Brenner
"Too Gloom-E." say Kyle Smith
Did they see the same movie? Or does Jules mean literal gravity? Apparently the key to writing a negative review of this film is to try to be "Wit-E".

To get a picture commissoned from Garth artist/writer of Comedity of me and Reno from Final Fantasy 7. That way I can stare at it and drool, and look at myself in drawn in sexy anime style, macking on Reno. *goo* that would be SO HOT!
And also to get one of Human Inu and Kagome getting married for Dice and the boy for a little wedding present. I think that they would LOVE that.
Okay Fan girl rampage over. Continue with life. Current Mood: geeky

 | 01:16 am - Yesterday I lost my aunt
I'll leave this bit.
So, my aunt C was fighting cervical cancer. She'd had surgery, and then a sequence of chemotherapy and was doing really well. The cancer indicators were dropping well, and once the last round of chemo was done, she was getting her energy back. All the signs were as good as they could be.
C went in for a small followup surgery on Monday. The surgery went well and she was fine. Then on Tuesday, her blood pressure dropped suddenly and they took her back to the hospital. It seems that she had a blood infection. By Tuesday night she was sedated with a feeding tube. She died Wednesday morning at 8:30 am.
I don't know much of the detail, as much of this came to me secondhand. I'll see whether I'll be flying out to Seattle when I know more. Current Mood: grieving

 | 12:15 am - New job! Well, I've accepted a new job offer, from
Vivísimo (AKA
Clusty), a search engine firm.
I'll be saying goodbye to FGM after over 9 years, but it's time for me to move on.
I'll be moving from a services company to a products company, which should be interesting,
and I'll be a jack of all trades, doing development, demos, customization, sales support, integration,
whatever needs doing. They're based in Pittsburgh, but I'll be staying in the DC area, as they're
growing their DC operations. I'll be working at home some, and at various sites around here.
It seems like quite a cool outfit. When I went out to the corporate headquarters, their space reminded
me of a cross between Google and the South Park animation studios. I've really liked all the people
I've met, and they're really
smart, on the ball people. The head of the company interviewed me on the roof, how cool is that? After some of his problem-solving interview questions,
he said my ability to set up and do math in my head and get real numbers quickly, and my knowledge of physics were quite solid, but my grasp of geography is not so firm (I'd have to agree). They had pictures of
one of their employees getting married on a mountaintop, there were a variety of different kinds of computers
in evidence. I've worked with their product and quite like it, both from a configuration standpoint and as a
user. Should be an interesting shift. Current Location: Purcellivlle Current Mood: hopeful

 | 11:04 pm - Traveling Tim on Traveling Well, I am off to London England for the 4th of July. I leave on a 9AM flight and won't be back until the 9th of July.
I may not be online at all during this trip as the hotel does not have free Internet, but we shall see.
Tips for traveling internationally: Always have a pen on you. Especially on the airplane. When flying internationally, at some point the airline will hand out a customs form to fill out. They will NOT have any pens to loan you. Bring your own.
Also, when traveling internationally, remember carry on limits may be different then you are use to here in the U.S. It looks like the one quart plastic bag with 3 oz bottles is good almost everywhere (though in Europe it is a 1 litre clear plastic bag and 100 ml bottles) but Japan is even more strict.
Always under-pack. If your bag is stuffed, you won't have room for the souvenirs you buy on the trip. Make sure you have enough room for a few tee-shirts, maybe two bottles of wine or a box of something. If you buy too much you can always consider mailing it home, or if you are expecting to buy a lot consider packing an empty bag in your stuff, bu that may require paying for an extra checked bag. Consider both these options when buying stuff on a trip.
Last but not least, try to make sure you can hand carry your bags if at all possible. Some flights get canceled and suddenly you may have to carry all your stuff clear across the airport and there may be no carts available. You never know. Anyway, packing as if you need to carry the bags yourself could save you a lot of trouble
See you all in a week!

 | 10:56 pm - Independence Day (U.S.) Happy 4th of July (early) to those who observe it....
As for me, I'm off to Pennsylvania late tomorrow morning for a BBQ and possibly some pool time if the weather holds (and of course to ooh and ahh over my friends' new domicile and coo over the little furry rodents -- don't worry, they're pets, not pests).
I'm planning on staying there overnight -- to those who make it to the contra tomorrow night, dance a little harder for me! (I should be back at the Friday Night Dance next week.)
To everyone else -- have (safe!) fun! May you be blessed (or at least, not cursed) by the traffic gods this holiday weekend! Current Mood: awake

 | 06:50 pm I had my first "adjustment" yesterday afternoon, which involved laying on my left side with my right leg raised towards my chest and arms crossed as if I were hugging myself, then having my chiro push at the point in my spine that hurts! Need I say OW? Yes, it hurt on the first attempt and I had to get her to stop until I could somewhat relax again. It hurt even more on the second attempt, I felt a crick in my back (which I guess was the whole point) and then my right foot started to tingle in the middle. End of adjustment, as I wasn't able to lay on the right side.
Before that I had another go on the table that swings my legs and after I had another 10 minutes of electrical stimulation with heat, which wasn't comfortable at all. Getting up afterwards left me feeling way dizzy, so I had to perch back on the table for another 10 minutes or so while drinking Gatorade and trying not to throw up. Eventually I got back to my car, drove home, took medication and slept until midnight.
The chiro wants me to do three sessions a week for some number of weeks, then switch down to two a week. I'm not convinced, either on the frequency or the usefulness, but I'll go along for now.

 | 02:14 pm - Inner Loop? Don't go there! Traffic stopped for miles and miles for the procession for Officer Findley. We had to get to Greenbelt to pick up my car, so our backup was only from Route 1 to Kennelworth, with fire engines and ambulances and police cars on the overpasses and sides of the roads to pay respects. We got the car, and headed back and saw miles of police cars coming down the inner loop, lights flashing, marked and unmarked. It was pretty impressive. Equally impressive was the back up, as the inner loop traffic was stopped from College Park all the way back into VA. Stopped. Dead. Nobody going anywhere.
Granted, the funeral procession has likely gone by now, but the traffic will not likely recover soon. I'm very glad we picked up the car when we did.
Now still waiting for word re: friend.
